What I’ve Learned from Life On the Water

Disclaimer: This blog post was created to help kick-off my new partnership with Lake Effect Co.! You can learn more about the brand and its mission, values, and community involvement here.

While I grew up in a suburb that bordered Milwaukee, I was far from a city kid. You know that famous river that flows right through downtown? Its northern section in Ozaukee County is where I spent my days water skiing and snowmobiling right out of our backyard!

We also spent at least a week every summer visiting my grandparents’ cottage in Three Lakes, Wisconsin, and even lived on a houseboat in The Bahamas for a few months in 2006 (you can read more about my takeaways from that experience here). I have also been a competitive water skier since 2012! Needless to say, I have spent my entire life on the water, and it’s a defining part of my story.

With that said, I am beyond excited to introduce you to Lake Effect Co. and tell you about why I decided to partner with them. The brand was created to ignite a community and sense of pride around lake life, northwoods vibes, and Midwest living, which are the exact same places where I feel most ‘at home!’ Katherine, the company’s owner, actually fell in love with lake life on the lake right next door to the lake my grandparents’ cottage is on! I love that we have that connection and know so many of you also have a little lake you love the most.

Everything that they sell gives me all the feels; from a cap that reads “Cabin Fever” in a grassy green color to “Lake Day” and “Long Live Lake Life” tanks in bold shades of gray and blue, I am instantly transported to my happy place when I see them, even when I’m stuck in the city. Wearing their products also reminds me how much fun it is to express myself through what I wear and that my vibe attracts my tribe!

While you might know that I spend a lot of time on the water, I’d like to share more about what this lifestyle means to me. Being on the water is liberating and provides a clear space to reflect and focus on everything I find important. It’s been there for me since childhood and through all of my life’s major hiccups, from being the outlet for healthy exercise after my eating disorder to serving as therapy after tough break-ups.

Additionally, the water is where I work the hardest, push myself, fail frequently, and get back up until I’m successful. Water skiing is the one of the biggest and best challenges of my life, as there is always something new to learn! The water is always forgiving of my falls and a constant support to stand on. It provides the perfect stage for shows and an oasis to distance myself from others when I want to spend some time practicing without an audience..

Because Wisconsin’s waterways are so important to me, I am passionate about protecting them. That is why I’m excited to work with a company that gives back. Lake Effect Co. donates 5% of all its profits to organizations like the Surfrider Foundation of Milwaukee, which helps lead education and environmental efforts to keep the Lake Michigan ecosystem healthy and thriving.

The brand also sources its products from companies that prioritize sustainability, many of whom are local to Wisconsin and the Midwest. Katherine is willing to go the extra mile when it comes to investing in her business and the planet!
