On April 22nd, 1970, Americans celebrated the first “Earth Day.” Originally proposed by Gaylord Nelson, a US Senator from Wisconsin, the annual event is now a global holiday dedicated to sustainability education and environmental remediation. As both Wisconsinites and global citizens, each of us has the potential to continue Nelson’s legacy by getting involved in Earth Day clean-up and education events in our communities. Work*Play*Earth Day - Various State Parks (Various Dates)

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is hosting a series of Earth Day events around the state to help Wisconsinites clean up their favorite state parks as a part of their “Get Outdoors!” nature program. Their Work*Play*Earth Day events includes trash collection, invasive species removal, and more.

2019 Earth Day Conference - Madison (April 20th)

The Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies at the University of Wisconsin – Madison is hosting their thirteenth annual Earth Day Conference this year! Their 2019 theme is “Imagine and Adapt: Possibilities in a Changing World.” The event will feature notable keynote speakers like climate-fiction author, Kim Stanley Robinson, and climate change adaption leader, Yolanda Joab. Discussions will focus on some of the biggest challenges that climate change presents and offer meaningful discussion on potential solutions to overcome them. Tickets to the event start at $15.

Earth Day of Service - Milwaukee (April 23rd)

The Urban Ecology Center is hosting an Earth Day of Service as a part of its annual “Earth Month” celebration. Volunteer work, as well as educational presentations and lunch, take place from 9:00 AM to noon at three park locations around the city. Choose from Riverside Park, Washington Park, or the Menomonee Valley for your day of service and bring a friend!

Ghidorzi Green & Clean - Wausau (April 25th)

Residents of the Greater Wausau Area come together each year to beautify their community at the Ghidorzi Green & Clean annual cleanup event. This year’s event starts at 8 AM. Participants will meet at Corporate Cove Tower and then travel to various towns in the area, including Wausau, Rib Mountain, Schofield, Rothschild, and Weston, to collect trash. The event concludes at 11 AM. Trash bags, gloves, and safety green t-shirts are provided. You can register as an individual or as a group, but be sure to do so in advance!

Give A Daam After Earth Day Event - Green Bay (May 5th)

Created by Marissa, a student from the University of Wisconsin – Green Bay, Give A Daam Ventures, LLC seeks to provide UWGB students with affordable and energy-efficient housing options near campus. As a part of her company’s mission to prioritize sustainability, Give A Daam Ventures hosted its first annual cleanup in 2018. This year’s second annual event takes place from 1 – 3 PM at Joannes Park.

Currently unconfirmed for 2020.
