I have visited Three Lakes every year since I was born, so I like to think I know a little bit about this iconic northwoods town. Home to the largest inland chain of lakes in the world, Three Lakes boasts some incredible water frontage and natural features. It is arguably one of the best places to visit in northern Wisconsin! You can spend hours cruising the chain of lakes or hiking through the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. With so much to do, it is a good idea to know some of the best local places to “fuel up” before or after a long day outside. This list of the best places to eat in and around Three Lakes, Wisconsin grows after each visit. For restaurant recommendations in nearby Rhinelander, you’ll want to check out this travel guide.
Best Breakfast, Brunch, & Lunch in Three Lakes
Sunset Grill has to be the first I mention, because it is a family tradition to go here. The cozy vibes and warm hospitality that await you inside are part of what makes it one of the best places to eat in and around Three Lakes. Open year-round, the Sunset Grill serves both breakfast and lunch. It also happens to be one of the few restaurants around that is accessible by car, boat, snowmobile, and airplane!
You can’t miss the adorable purple building that houses Cindy’s Country Cafe while driving through Three Lakes. Proud to be family owned and operated, Cindy’s is a classic American diner. They always serve great food and lots of smiles! My only caveat with Cindy’s is that the restaurant is sometimes short-staffed, which means breakfasts orders can have almost an hour’s turnaround time. Locals as well as visitors seem to love this place, though, so I encourage you to set aside at least one morning of your trip up north to stop by!
Best Dinner, Dining, & Wine in Three Lakes
There is nothing better than ending a fun day in the northwoods with a sunset boat trip to a classic American pub. Pike’s Pine Isle Lodge sits along the shore of Medicine Lake and is easily accessible to anyone on the chain. Their menu has comfort food galore, complete with a classic Wisconsin Friday Fish Fry! As a vegetarian, I can neither confirm nor deny the quality of their fish fry, but I can attest to the great quality of their pizza.
Whether you are looking for the perfect raspberry wine in summer, pumpkin wine on Thanksgiving, or a classic Wisconsin cranberry wine during the holidays, look no further than the Three Lakes Winery. Located in downtown Three Lakes with a generous parking lot, it is convenient and easy to access. One of the best free things to do in Three Lakes is take a short tour of the winery and sample up to six of their fruit-flavored wines. While you grab some to take home with you, be sure to wander the store to find locally made desserts, crafts, and other memorable souvenirs!
This classic Wisconsin supper club is known for their steaks. What makes it a vegetarian’s favorite northwoods restaurant? All I can say is that the White Stag Inn is only one of two restaurants in the world that I go to specifically for the salad. I don’t mean to say that it’s something fancy; for some reason, their combo of iceberg lettuce and homemade French dressing just satisfies. Two other dressings are included in their sampler though, so you still have some great options if French isn’t your fave. For an entrée, I usually just load my plate with baked potatoes and it’s honestly a dream come true.
