Summer is wedding season in Wisconsin! Tyler and I headed to Southwestern Wisconsin recently to celebrate the marriage of some friends and decided to turn our visit into an overnight stay. One of my all-time favorite travel blogger tips is making every small trip an adventure! Even if you aren’t in town for a wedding, Prairie du Chien is a great place to enjoy a romantic weekend getaway in Wisconsin. It is also the perfect distance for a short trip from Milwaukee, Chicago, or the Twin Cities.
Where is Prairie du Chien?
Prairie du Chien is located in southwestern Wisconsin along the Mississippi River. It is the county seat of Crawford County. From Milwaukee, it is about a three hour drive due west.
Where to Stay in Prairie du Chien
Tyler and I stayed at the AmeriVu Inn & Suites during our visit, which was conveniently located near the venue for the wedding reception. It was very affordable, so we decided to splurge on a whirlpool suite! It ended up being the perfect way to wind down after all the dancing we did at the wedding reception. The hotel also offers complimentary breakfast and has both an indoor pool and fitness center.
Where to Eat in Prairie du Chien
Because we were just in town for one night, we only made one restaurant stop on our trip. The wedding reception was held at Huckleberrys Restaurant, which typically serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They have an extensive menu that even includes vegetarian options like pizza and sandwiches!
Scenic Outdoor Spots in Prairie du Chien
The wedding ceremony was held at La Riviere Park, which was picturesque and perfect for the occasion. While we didn’t get the chance to explore much of the 300-acre park, it has some trails and picnic areas that would make it a great place to stop on a romantic weekend getaway in Prairie du Chien.
Just south of the border in Grant County lies one of the best places in Wisconsin to see the Mississippi River. Wyalusing State Park lies in the heart of Wisconsin’s driftless region, known for its rolling hills and riverside bluffs. It has a variety of hiking and biking trails, as well as campsites for those who prefer to take their romantic weekend getaway outdoors. You can learn more about its geologic past by reading the Wisconsin State Parks book on my Wisconsin reading list.
What I Love About Prairie du Chien
In just the short time that we were able to visit, I fell in love with the charm of this small Wisconsin town. It is one of Wisconsin’s oldest towns and is brimming with history! We spent more of our time exploring nature than the town itself, so I would love to really experience more of that on my next visit.
The people we interacted with on the trip embodied “Midwestern nice” to a tee and were friendly and welcoming. This town in the hills is literally a hidden gem in southwestern Wisconsin. I would definitely recommend Prairie du Chien to anyone looking for a romantic weekend getaway and hope to make another trip there with Tyler very soon!
